5 Tips for Improving Your Network and Computer Security

environmental-management-softwareMany seemingly common sense network security protocols are ignored by a stunning number of admins. Leaving doors open to your computers and networks can cost your organization a fortune.  Upgrading to the latest operating system and reducing admin rights can help your company avoid this turmoil.

As hackers become more skilled and bold you must become more vigilant to prevent any security breaches which would be disastrous for your business. Do your due diligence now to find any weak areas in your network which need to be urgently addressed.

Reduce Admin Accounts

Increasing the amount of admin users can also increase the risk of network security being compromised. Minimizing the number of admin accounts can greatly reduce the risk of any security breaches. Many people use the default admin account for day to day computer activities which increases the likelihood that they will be stricken by Malware or some other threat online. Protect yourself by creating a standard user account for normal daily tasks. Only use the admin account for necessary procedures like making system-wide configuration updates or installing software or hardware.

Upgrade the Operating System

Older, dated operating systems do a poor job protecting you against security breaches. Release the idea that you should only upgrade if a problem arises. Upgrade now to a 64 bit operating system to make it more difficult for hackers to access your network. Although it may seem costly, not making this investment will cost your business much more money in the long run if a hacker breaks into your network and compromises your entire system.

Download the Latest Updates for Your Programs

Update all third party programs any time you are asked to do so to protect your computer against online threats. Check for updates periodically if you have not been prompted to update your system in a while. You might not be interested in the new program features but these updates generally include new patches which enhance security. Use software which scans programs on your PC which require updates to stay current.

Strong Passwords

Using strong passwords makes it more difficult for hackers to access your network. Avoid the usual password pitfalls of using a person’s name along with a few random numbers. Sophisticated hacking programs can guess these basic passwords easily. Use a combination of letters, numbers and symbols to make it difficult for bad guys to guess your password and to keep your network secure. Printers, NAS drivers, routers and all network devices need to be configured with strong passwords.

Remove Remote Administration

Disable remote administration to prevent unauthorized outside users from gaining access to your network. Most routers present you with a remote admin option so you can log in to change network setting through the internet. Shutting off this feature can give you peace of mind as admin tasks will only be able to be performed inside the network.
