Family Fun Spots in Ontario

 ID-10050819

As Canada’s second largest province, Ontario is filled to the brim with fun activities for the whole family. There is something for everyone, no matter what his age or interest. If you are looking for something fun to do with the kiddies, whether you are a local or tourist, here are just a few worthwhile activities to consider.

Niagara Falls

While Niagara Falls is well known as a honeymoon and general vacation spot, it also makes for a great day trip. Take in a tour of the falls and the somewhat kitschy tourist atmosphere. There is no shortage of restaurants, shopping and other fun activities to fill your day.

Toronto Zoo

The Toronto Zoo is not only the largest in the country, but one of the largest in the world. Here you will find over 460 species, organized by the region where they originated. Besides the main exhibits, there is a special kid’s zone, full of interactive activities, demonstrations and a splash park.

Science North and Dynamic Earth

These two science centers, located in Sudsbury, are chock-full of exhibits covering numerous scientific topics. Science North educates visitors on everything from planes to butterflies, is full of interactive exhibits and learning activities and also hosts an Imax theatre and planetarium . Dynamic Earth primarily focuses on geology; its most popular offering is an elevator ride that brings you deep underground into a simulating mining area. Many of the exhibits are mean to help children improve reading skills and think critically.

Rideau Canal

When the weather is nice, a visit to the Rideau Canal is the perfect family outing. Not only is it a national historical site, it also has the designation of being a UNESCO World Heritage site. Constructed after the War of 1812, it was designed to serve as an alternate route between Montreal and Kingston in the event the St. Lawrence River was invaded by the Americans. Presently, this urban waterway is lined with bike paths and beautiful trees. It is a great place for canoeing, pedal boating and biking.

Canadian Museum of Nature

The Canadian Museum of Nature is a great place for kids and adults alike. The permanent exhibits run the gamut from dinosaur skeletons to live creepy crawlies. There are always an interesting variety of traveling exhibits as well. While many of the exhibits are a bit ‘’old school,’’ the museum also has many newer sections with lots of interactive exhibits and hands-on learning opportunities for kids.

OHL Hockey

If sports are your thing, an OHL hockey game can be a real treat. This league, comprised of 16-to-20 year olds, is a great place to see up-and-coming future hockey superstars. The games move quickly and the players are highly skilled. It is a much more economical alternative to NHL games, where ticket prices can reach over 100 dollars. Weekend afternoon games probably offer the most family-friendly atmosphere.

Black Creek Pioneer Village

Step back in time with a trip to Black Creek Pioneer Village. Here you will find historic buildings, interpreters in period dress and demonstrations of skills and chores common at the time. There is also loads of hands-on activities for the kids. While it is primarily geared towards the younger set, it does have a microbrewery on site for the mom and dad.
