Five Great Cities for You to Explore

Most city break travelers tend to head for the more familiar destinations like London, Paris, Venice and New York, but it’s important to remember there are plenty more beautiful locations around the world which are well worth a visit. If you’ve already enjoyed seeing the Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Liberty, the Houses of Parliament and the Rialto Bridge, here are five cities that should be in contention to host your next short holiday.

Florence

This incredible city is one of the most attractive in the whole of Europe, yet it remains something of a hidden gem to millions of seasoned travelers. Perhaps the best-known landmark in Florence is the Uffizi Gallery, one of the finest in the world, so if you’re a culture vulture be sure to set aside some time for a visit. The architecture of the city is spectacular, especially at night when many of the buildings are illuminated.

Lisbon

As you might expect from a city with such a rich and varied heritage, Lisbon features influences from many parts of the world. But there’s more to this wonderful destination than historic buildings – it’s also, for example, one of continental Europe’s best locations for lovers of retail therapy. The district of Chiado is a particular favorite, because it’s home to many highly fashionable stores.

Glasgow

The largest city in Scotland has become increasingly popular with tourists in recent years, but there are still plenty of travelers who would opt to visit Edinburgh instead. There is plenty to see and do in Glasgow, however, including the highly regarded Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. The nightlife in the city center is also a major attraction, so make sure you bring your party face with you!

Brussels

Northern Europe is home to a number of wonderful cities which offer a tempting combination of modern attractions and historic landmarks, and one of the finest of them all is Brussels. The capital of Belgium is a paradise for tourists who like to explore atmospheric market squares, welcoming restaurants and tranquil parks. Its central location makes it an easily reachable destination for millions of Europeans.

Budapest

One of several major cities that straddle the mighty River Danube, Budapest is one of the prettiest cities on the whole continent. One of the most popular tourist attractions is the Hungarian Parliament Building, which is among the largest of its kind in the world. When the National Assembly isn’t sitting there are guided tours of this spectacular landmark available, so sign up for one and get a feel for the heritage of this fascinating country.
