Opportunities After Graduating from Art School

What does it mean to be an artist? People have different opinions and apply various criteria to define art. Many believe there is no middle ground for becoming an artist: you will either make it, or will hardly make ends meet. Lack of security and stability prevent many talented people from pursuing a career in art. It is obvious that not everyone could become an art celebrity or the next Damien Hirst, nonetheless, you can still make the most of it by pursuing your dream career in art. Art students should decide if these extreme views have anything in common with reality.

As far as all the stereotyping goes, it is becoming more difficult for art students to figure out what a career in the arts can bring them. Many people have no clue how to make a living through art. Here is what art students need to know:

–          Modern artists have to use various approaches to art. They combine various techniques and methods to create something new and unique. Don’t be afraid to mix and match. For example, woodblock printing is one of the mainstream art styles.

–          If you think that woodblock printing is not worth your attention, think twice. This ancient art was used to print images and texts on various surfaces throughout East Asia and China. Most famous woodblock prints come from Japan. Japanese artist Hokusai created his most recognizable work The Great Wave off Kanagawa between 1830 and 1833. It depicts a giant wave over the boats in the open sea with Mount Fuji on the background. Modern woodblock artists use both letters and images to create versatile art pieces.

–          Most of the artists are either self-employed or freelance. That is why you need to start building your portfolio and work on your networking skills. Learn how to budget and spend money wisely. Keep in mind that freelancers don’t get any paid vacations, maternity leaves or pensions. Preemptive planning is the key.

–          As a freelancer you will enjoy the freedom to do your work at any given time or day. There is no need to wake up early and go to the office as long as you meet the deadlines.

–          Socializing and self-promotion will help you in increasing your audience. Don’t forget to showcase your work via Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and other social channels. A personal website will show your potential employers that you are professional and self-motivated.

–          Work on your portfolio. It should be dynamic, and show the depth of your work. Employers don’t care about your grades; they want to see your potential.

–          Be prepared to have a second job or take on internships. Internships may help you boost your career and improve your employability. A second job in a non-art field will simply help you pay your bills.

–          If you want to become a successful artist you need to work hard. The art sector is notorious for incredible levels of job satisfaction. The industry is highly competitive and you might find it hard to get your first job. However, if you have enough passion for art and the strength to overcome the difficulties, you will stay ahead of the game.
